Idolatry is clearly condemned in scripture. See the following extracts (in book order):

Exodus 20:4-6 "Do not make for yourselves images of anything in heaven or on earth or in the water under the earth.  5 Do not bow down to any idol or worship it, because I am the Lord your God and I tolerate no rivals. I bring punishment on those who hate me and on their descendants down to the third and fourth generation.  6 But I show my love to thousands of those who love me and obey my laws."

Exodus 34:17 "Do not make gods of metal and worship them."

Leviticus 26:1 The Lord said, "Do not make idols or set up statues, stone pillars, or carved stones to worship. I am the Lord your God."

Deuteronomy 4:16 "... that you do not sin by making for yourselves an idol in any form at all.whether man or woman," (... [through verse 40])

Deuteronomy 27:15 "God's curse on anyone who makes an idol of stone, wood, or metal and secretly worships it; the LORD hates idolatry."

There are many more citations not listed.

However, making a doll or an android for most purposes may not be idolatry. The conclusion by conjectural emendation is that there is no reason why God would be against someone making an android per se. It can be no more than any other machine or contrivance in God's eye as long as the android does not become an idol.

Peradventure the android is capable self-awareness or the like, then a creation has been allowed by God to be created by his creation in a novel way. Treat the creation with the care and respect necessary and due to an image of an image of GOD, but do not make this creation a god!

Could you have some religious taboo against making an android? Probably not if you have purchased this encyclopedia or the companion handbook and are seriously considering doing so. Since the subject has been queried, let us examine matter.

An android could be construed by some to be a "graven image." If an android is a graven image because it is in the form of a human being created by a human, think of the theological question that suggests: "Can God create a graven image if a particular image copied by his creation becomes graven?" Assuming that a good operational definition of graven image is; the form, illustration, representation, etc. of an entity that is not of the Holy God, and that this image receives homage, respect, worship, deference, etc. that rightfully belongs to God. A suitable synonym for "graven image" could be an "idol."

The English language is too powerful to use "idol" and "graven image" that interchangeably. Suppose the graven means that the source of the image is lower on the "pecking order" than the one who is making it, as opposed to an idol where it is an image of some entity that the crafter perceives as higher in the cosmic scheme. For example, if a chimpanzee was making an effigy of a fish, that would be a graven image. If that same chimp could make a doll in the image of Dolly Parton, that would be an idol.

Idolatry might be a problem, however, existential pragmatists are more comfortable with a more utilitarian explanation: Once an inventor has blown the steam of their fantasy off in the whistle, there is no real reason to make a device in the form of a human for it still can do no work. If you need a typist, hire a secretary. If you need your house cleaned, commandeer the necessary brooms and any labor saving device and get-about it. If you are going away, let an answering machine take your calls. If you are sexually self-stimulated, ... well, that is not the purpose of this project.
