Navicular bones (L&R): The navicular bones are classified by
Gray with the "Short, Long, and Flat" bones. (These have
also been classified as an "Irregular" bone.) These are of
the tarsal bone. Like the other tarsals, it should be
strong and accurate.
Do not be tempted to combine any of the astragalus, calcaneum, cuboid, or navicular bones into one part! They account for
most of the movement within the tarsal group. (See Gray, page
285.)
These eight bones could be formed with the hybrid process
because of the nature of their shape. A cast of a lighter material could be used to form a minimum sized shape, suitable for
juvenile android's and larger, and then built up with layers of a
composite. So far, these points can be applied to the carpals
also.
Alternatively, these bones, especially the carpals more so
than the tarsal bones, could be hollow. This would provide space
for magnetic amplifiers, sensors, and/or dedicated sub-processors.
Whatever the final construction method is selected for the
fabrication of the "Short, Long, and Flat" bones, the Navicular
bones could be cast also.
Nose: Trivia: "Each of your ears, if typical, is about as long
as your nose." [Boyd, 6 Mar. `95.]
Profiles show the shape of the nose.
"To be aesthetically perfect, the length of your nose should
be a third of your face. ... What's the perfect distance from
the tip of the nose to where the edge of the nostrils joins the
upper lip? A. A third of the length of the nose." [Boyd,
9 Feb.`90]
"Each of your ears, if typical, is about as long as your
nose." [Boyd, 6 Mar. 95].
